Two years after completion of the main house, in early 2004, my clients were ready to build a guest house to accommodate visiting family, their grown children and grandchildren.
Back in 1998-99, while developing the main house design and master plan for the future, we identified a possible guest house location to the west of the main house, where the grade is gently sloping and meadow-like. During construction of the main house, we decided that the area to the west should remain an undeveloped foreground to the main view. Given that the hill to the south of the main house is densely populated with oaks, which left a rather steep, bare area on the east side of the site adjacent to the guest parking area. The view from this location is to the east, overlooking the canyons that divide the ranch, and to the rest of their land below.
